Porto Venere

Porto Venere

Portovenere or Porto Venere is a town in the province of La Spezia that since 1997 along with Palmaria Islands, Tino, Tinetto and Cinque Terre was inserted between the heritage of humanity by UNESCO. It lies at the southern part of a peninsula that staccandosi by jagged coastline of the Riviera Ligure eastern goes to form the western shore of the Gulf of Spezia. At the end of this peninsula are three small islands: the Palmaria, Tino and Tinetto and only Palmaria island, which lies directly opposite the village of Portovenere is a small inhabited. The name of the village should come from a temple dedicated to the goddess Venus located exactly at the place now stands the Church of St. Peter. The name was probably linked to the fact that, according to tradition, the goddess was born from the foam of the sea or because we like to believe Porto Venere was a beautiful and romantic resort even then.
